How long do I have to wear the stockings?

2 weeks on both legs and 6 weeks on the operated leg.

How long before I can drive?

Six weeks if the Right knee (driving leg) was operated and 2-4 weeks, or when reaction time is good, if left knee had surgery.

How long do I wear the rubber foot boot at night?

6 weeks or until Dr. Fox says you may stop.

How long do I use the motion machine (CPM)?

The day after surgery we start at the 50° motion. Each day thereafter it is to be increased 5° in the a.m. and 5° in the p.m. (total 10° per day) until it reaches 120°. Typically the CPM will then be used for a week at 120° then you may get rid of it.

How long do I need to spend each day in the motion machine?

As much as possible, but a minimum of 3 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the evening.

When can I take a shower?

You may get in the shower anytime after the wound is dry (no drainage) while the staples are still in place. No submerging the wound in a bathtub, hot tub, or swimming pool.

How long do I use the walker or crutches?

6 weeks or until Dr. Fox tells you it is OK to discontinue.

Do I need a card for the airport?

No, since 911 cards are of no use. You will go through the metal detector- sometimes it will go off and sometimes it will not. If it goes off, you will be asked to step aside where you will be “wanded” and the knee patted. No strip search will be done!

Do I need antibiotics prior to going to the dentist?

Yes. We recommend two years of preventative antibiotics to prevent blood borne infection in the total joint.
